Benefits of Nose Breathing: Nitric Oxide

Breathing through the nose increases nitric oxide in the body.  Nitric oxide is:

- a bronchodilator which increases airflow in the lungs

- an antibacterial agent that helps neutralize germs and bacteria

- a vasodilator which enhances blood flow in the body and to the extremities.

Valentine's Day Workshop at Thrive

For Valentine's day, I led a stress relief workshop at Thrive, a DC homeless shelter. Here's what I just heard from the director:

The very next day we had a busy morning, and after serving numerous clients and assisting them with intakes, Mario and I sat in the computer lab and did some parachute breathing together! It was extremely effective at helping me recenter and refocus before starting my next task.

The staff who participated were very grateful. They expressed afterward how much they appreciated the workshop and the agency focusing on "their self-care". They are looking forward to the next workshop!

Nothing beats helping reduce DC stress!

New Testimonials from Workshops and Private Sessions

Cool stuff! It's been since college that I've felt this way and that was twenty years ago!

Amazing!  Social workers, please come to both learn and take good care of yourselves.

Great information about the science of the nervous system.  Helps to understand what is going on in our bodies.  Fantastic exercises and breathing!

Great opportunity to learn experientially and connect with others.  Leaving the experience relaxed and with great tools for myself and clients.

I am looking forward to using these relaxation techniques to help calm myself when feeling anxious or stressed.

Rob teaches techniques that improve awareness, lessen tension and reduce stress.  Great stuff!  -Jim Sims

The science descriptions were clear and understandable.  I loved the tremoring!

I enjoyed the various breathing techniques: ones to stimulate, others to calm the nervous system.  I enjoyed the explanation of the sympathetic/parasympathetic balance.  I enjoyed the movements, exercises, and the tremoring.

Rob is a patient, wise, and respectful teacher.

I'm grateful for having experienced this moment.  The breathing techniques made me more aware of the sensations in my body.  I feel grounded.

Interesting Research

Increased Mercury Levels in Patients with Celiac Disease following a Gluten-Free Regimen.

Celiac disease is an allergy to gluten but this may apply to anyone with a gluten-free diet.

According to the study: Data demonstrate a fourfold increase of mercury blood levels in celiac patients following a gluten-free diet. From: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25802516

According to the WHO (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs361/en/):

  • Exposure to mercury – even small amounts – may cause serious health problems, and is a threat to the development of the child in utero and early in life.

  • Mercury may have toxic effects on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.

  • Mercury is considered by WHO as one of the top ten chemicals or groups of chemicals of major public health concern.

My thoughts: Less gluten = less binding = decreased mercury detoxification. People following a paleo-style diet should supplement with another binder (like chlorella, clays, or similar) to avoid potential immunological and neurological effects of mercury.

The Chlorella I use are:

  • Dr. Mercola Fermented Chlorella (AMZN)
  • Chlorella Pyrensoidosa (AMZN)
